April 25 to May 1

A recovery week is in order to say the least! With work covering six days this week, it will be easy to reduce the mileage and intensity for a few days. The goals for the week will be to run easy and incorporate more weight lifting and stretching.

Monday; April 25: Off to work today so a day off.

Tuesday; April 26: Worked all day...this whole work thing really cramps my running!

Wednesday; April 27: Waking up to a perfect cool morning in Salt Lake and out the door at 615am. A nice easy 8.5 miler was the run for the day, mostly along the frontage road near the airport. Not the most scenic route, but it is what is available and beats the indoor treadmill. After the run, I did bounce around on the universal weight machine in the hotel gym. It's amazing what you can come up with when you analyze one of these large gadgets. The theory is that it is better to get something done verses nothing done.

Thursday; April 28:  Well, it's a good thing this was to be an easy week of running. Anyone remember all those storms/tornadoes that were blazing across the southeast? Yes, I was in the midst of the whole darn mess. No, not in the storms, but in the Delta Airlines meltdown going into Atlanta. Wednesday started easy enough but quickly went downhill as the Captain I was flying with left the trip with no replacement pilot in sight. Once that fire was put out (found a new Captain), another fire started in that Atlanta Air Traffic Control stopped all inbound traffic. Once that fire was smushed, we blasted off from Memphis towards the fine southern city of Atlanta, only to hold  (burn lots of gas for no reason) for over 2 hours and return to Memphis. Blundering through getting a gate, getting a gate agent, getting stranded crew members on, getting refueled, getting new paperwork from dispatch, and convincing ourselves we were not THAT tired, we blasted off back to Atlanta and landed at 4am. I had been on duty for about 14 hours, the Captain about 12 hours and we both had been up 20+ hours! Oh, it wasn't over! Numerous crew members and stranded passengers yielded very few hotel rooms and it took crew accommodations quite some time to send us to the Marriott who then sent us to the Sheraton. I think I passed out in bed about 6am.
Oh..as for running....  Not much sleep and a botched work scheduled produced only a 4 miler on the elliptical and some legs weight lifting.

Friday; April 29: So, in St. Louis there was a robotics convention that included several thousand (no kidding!) teenagers! Much to our dismay, the entire Hyatt downtown was full of the teenyboppers and they were even having a "Robo Prom" on Thursday night! Woooo Hoooooo.....several hundred kids running hither and yon, all over the hotel, slamming doors, and yelling in the halls. Oh, what fun!!!! Not sure when I actually fell asleep but the alarm was close behind that moment. And then flew all day! ...AGAIN....way too much time in the air!

Saturday; April 30:  Now, you would think that if a person is awake for 22 hours, he/she would find the time during the day/night to get a run in...well, think again! Up n at 'em early  after arguing with crew scheduling over legal to fly issues. Down to Port A Prince, Haiti and then back to New York and then a long flight to home to Denver, followed by a long drive home. The only thing got a workout in these last few days was my patience and my behind from sitting on it!

Sunday; May 1: After getting in about 130am and finding a fresh 2 inch dump of snow, Traysen and I opted for a snowball fight and a walk in the woods.

Summary: Well, this was supposed to be an easy week of running and that it was! Even though I don't like weeks with this little running, they sometimes occur due to work/life, etc and I know the break from all the miles only renews the spirit to start training hard again the following week. For some folks, this might be the start of a downward spiral to where they eventually stop running/exercising but for those of us that know our lives are centered around keeping healthy, we accept these off weeks, knowing we will return to the active life. Sometimes, we often let "excuses" get in the way of our running/exercise and sometimes our lives just don't allow the running/exercise to happen. The difference being what constitutes a valid reason for not running/exercising. In most cases, the work, the career, the job, the bringing home the bacon constitutes a valid reason for not running/exercising.
The highlight of the week would be that I did find 10 minutes to sign up for the Leadville 50 mile race on July 16th! So, the wonderful miles of training will resume in earnest and I look forward to most of those miles!
